This is one night out you're not going to forget in a hurry. I don't think I've ever left a restaurant/nightclub feeling so exhilarated before. It's not often that you find a restaurant with a gimmick where the basics are done right too. Normally if you go somewhere with a show you expect the food to be just OK, with al the creative focus of the venue being spent on the central entertainment concept. Nor do you expect the drinks to be of any sort of high standard. And often, the entertainment itself is a bit half-hearted, or you leave feeling like you didn't really get your money's worth. CIRCUS BREAKS THIS TREND. Food - astoundingly good. I went with a large party and we'd pre-ordered what we wanted. I'd ordered the steak and it was perfect, and exactly how I ordered it. I wasn't expecting the kitchen to put out food of such high standard to such a large group of people on a busy night. The starters were all excellent pan-Asian blends of flavour too, and considering the execution of every person's meal in the venue has to be delivered faultlessly to coincide with the timings of the entertainment, this is remarkable. Drink - I had a couple of cocktails to sample and then was on wine for the rest of the night. Both cocktails I had were well balanced in flavour and went very well with the pan-Asian food on offer. The wine was one that the hostess recommended and it went perfectly with the steak. Service - Circus wins five out of five on the service alone. Seriously, I'm generally critical of quality of service, especially in London, and I was feeling very pessimistic about the level of service I'd get in Circus. I was wrong to be pessimistic. We had a hostess for our table who was jubliant, energetic and attentive to our needs. One of us spilled a drink and she had it cleared up with enthusiasm. Even when we left our table and headed to the bar she kept checking that we were all OK and happy. The rest of the staff were punctual and attentive, and again they have to work to very careful timings to deliver food and clear tables in perfect timing with the stage shows. During the shows, they even operate some of the stage lights or hold back curtains for the performers, so it's all very carefully executed. It's SO rare to find really good service in London, and it makes such a difference. Circus is where all the good waiting staff in London are working! Entertainment - so this is the hook of Circus - you come to eat and drink, and between courses acrobatic entertainers perform various marvellous routines on top of (or above) the top table in the venue (wisely made from polished stone). We had balancing acts, spinning hoop routines (acrobatics around a large hoop hanging from the ceiling), and one jaw-droppingly talented hula-hooper. Seriously, he was amazing. You have to see him to believe it. Again, this is all executed in a small space on a table surrounded by seated guests. It makes you feel like you're dining with some world class circus entertainers and they're practising their big top routines between courses. You have to go to this place. This is ideal for a date (perhaps not a first date), or for larger groups. You'll be talking about it for many years to come. It's probably Covent Garden's hottest dining venue right now. I love it.
