Easy to find, straight forward to board with your car. Have been twice over the first time very calm and slept like a baby, second time, oh so rough difficult to sleep due to the rough seas. Did the day sail one way, need to take a book or couple of good friends as it's a long trip. Still the best way to go with your car saves the cost of car hire in Tasmania and you are not restricted on the amount of luggage as in Airlines. The food is Ok there is something for everyone.

I enjoyed being on this big boat. I got a cheap ticket and i spent the night with many others on the reclined chairs, they are quite comfortable, blank and pillow provided, only thing is the feet smell in there.... It s awful! Please spirit of tasmania so something about it! On board u can buy food and hot drinks or alcohol.

Quick tip:
If you are taking your vehicle on board, try to be at the station at the early end of the boarding time to avoid traffic.
Booking & Getting there:
Online booking is the easiest way to book and can be done directly from Spirit of Tasmania website. Along with the ticket you get boarding directions, google maps friendly.
On board:
If you booked a room, you have basic boarding amenities like bed, bathroom and toilet. Head to the deck for shopping, drinks, food and other entertainment.

This is the only way to cross the Bass Strait from Tasmania to Victoria with a vehicle. This service runs 2 ships seamlessly backwards and forwards across the strait all year round. They offer different priced fares. Cheaper fares include a recliner chair and the more expensive options include beds in cabins. The food is of a high quality pub standard. We often travel over to the big island from Tasmania with our dog show team for various competitions throughout the year and can not fault the service!

A well oiled machine is the Spirit of Tasmania experience, from go to woe. We travel her twice a year & totally enjoy the experience. A word from an experienced traveller - "Get a room" for either day or night sailings! If it's rough or smooth it's worth ever cent, they are small but very comfortable with own shower & toilet. The staff on entry to docks & on board are very welcoming. Lots to do for kids & entertainment for all ages. Get your Tasmanian National Parks pass on board as well. We love Tassie & it's people!

Service and staff on this boat are excellent. I just don’t like travelling on it. Daylight travel is great, can’t stand night time travelling. Increased travel is making getting to and from Tasmania more difficult, unless you make plans well in advanced. Wanted to go across for 4 weeks in February and was told I couldn’t get back until the end of May. Ended up spending my time over there in late spring, too cold.
Two new ships are hopefully coming online late 2019 or 2020, hopefully these will cater for the increased travel and provide a more comfortable trip.

Very efficient, well organised system. On and off the boat with minimal delay.

Nice way to visit Tassie...
More expensive than flying...but if you need a car over there its worth considering....friendly staff and good meals in the cafeteria style restaurant....always sleep in a cabin to arrive fresh next morning...

A great service. Boarding and disembarking was efficient and well organized. Staff were friendly and helpful although could have directed people getting out of their cars a bit better. The facilities on board are excellent with a variety of spots to relax. Food and snacks were easily obtained or you could take your own (no byo booze though). For a day trip, we had a recliner ... you are given a pass key for the area at checkin. We roamed, sitting in a few different lounge areas. All had appeal depending on whether you wanted to read, watch TV, work on a computer or just relax.

Reasonably smooth sailing conditions on our first trip on this ship with only gentle rocking at the Port Phillip heads and for an hour or two afterwards. However, noise and vibration from engines was considerable, especially at the rear of the ship. This meant I didn't sleep for more than about 4 hours. Cabin temperature, beds and bathroom were good although a slight odour issue indicative of possible sub optimal ventilation. Update following return journey: I slept in same cabin (8244) and had even more trouble sleeping getting between 2 and 3 hours for the night. Despite recent refurbishment, the ship is 20 years old and seems like an old car that is being driven far too hard with rattles and vibration. Anyone who thinks this is like a cruise ship will be disappointed - it is more like an old river boat that is ok for a short trip but not for 10-11 sustained hours including sleeping. I noticed that on the rare occasion the engines were not running flat-out the vibration and noise level was actually acceptable so the solution could simply be to reduce the normal cruising speed slightly? If going on this ship book a cabin in the middle or front section of the ship. To do this requires ringing and a making a booking with a person rather than online where cabins are assigned automatically. The only real benefit of sailing to Tas - compared to flying - is the possibility to bring your own vehicle. The efficiency of boarding with a car could however do with improvement - we spent a long time in a queue with engine off. All round a disappointment which means I am more likely to fly and rent a car next time.
