Anyone dissing the Cal Neva just doesn't get it. They aren't trying to be the Peppermill (Thank God!) Cal Neva is one of the last "Old Reno" clubs, and yes, it has grown a bit seedy in some ways, but that's the point. It's Old School, baby! The hotel is the old Onslow House, which again, ain't the Peppermill, but it has a heckuva lot better location: close to the river walk, restaurants, museums, shops, bars. So the elevator is slow, sheesh. Casino food is what it is, but you can't argue with their prices. If you want something different, walk a block in any direction. I have experienced great service in the restaurants, and hotel staff that bends over backwards to make you happy. The Cal Neva provides free parking for anybody in their two multi-level structures. The casino is as good as any and better than many. And it still feel like Reno before all the glitzy big hotels came along. It's one of the last places with a live keno game. It's all about character, with maybe some nostalgia thrown in. Commenters who describe all sorts of bad service might have been carrying some baggage of their own.
