I try to visit the staples of Deadwood at least once a year just so I can stay up on where in town is good to eat. If it's good, I eat there often. Needless to say, it'll be at least another year before I eat here again.
To start, and to be fair, our wait staff was fantastic! Crystal did a great job and was very prompt, friendly, and attentive. The food, subpar at best.
I took a friend out to eat this morning and both of our entrees came with a side of eggs. Both of us ordered over medium eggs, his came slightly over done while mine were definitely over hard. Eggs are simple things and always a good base on which to calibrate the quality of care a cook places on their skill. The morning cooks here were all over the place.
To continue the massacre, the medium cooked steak had been over tenderized and was fairly flavorless and my sourdough toast was more akin to stale hard bread. The only saving grace of the entire meal was the hash browns and the extra side of bacon I had ordered. Were it not for the availability of steaksauce, salsa, and Tabasco; or the fact that I was enjoying the conversation... I would have walked out in disgust.
If you are looking for a great breakfast try somewhere else or stick to the basics of pancakes or oatmeal, maybe even cold cereal but do not waste your Deadwood experience trying the breakfast steak at the Gem.
